Social Distancing for Warehouse Workers - a solution

Keeping a social distance of 6 feet is easier for people in a general public place, like a grocery store, or a park. But it is extremely hard for workers who are working in a non-stationed dense plant, such as an Amazon warehouse. They have to constantly moving to the area for stowing, picking, even packing. During a crises like the recent COVID-19, the often urgent demand items are concentrated on a few areas, such as the none-perished food, toilet papers, and cleaning supplies. In this situation, the workflow has to be strategically designed to avoid over crowd. Simply let the pickers wait for the clearance of others is impossible due to the time pressure.

My notes captured my thoughts on how to use simple off-shelf products like Raspberry Pie, BlueTooth Beacon, and cloud service to strategically arranging the workflow, also bring people’s awareness.

(I want to claim that this idea has nothing to do with my employer Amazon, although it could solve some problems Amazon Fulfillment Centers are facing. )

I stumbled up my Amazon farewell email today:

Hi,

This is my last week in Amazon AFT. Before leaving, I want to say thank you and best wishes to you all on your journey ahead!

Before joined Amazon, I had worked companies large or small, taught a computer science class in UW, and tried to start a startup. Upon the ending of each journey, what never ends is the impact from the people I have met. Some have become my lifelong friends, some have stuck in my memory as forever inspiration, and some, contributed to my toughness. I really appreciate that we have crossed path here from various corners of the world, with an astonishing fact that it is in a chance of one out of several billions!

As a busy working mother, with no time hopping on a helicopter or turning into a tiger, I ended up with self-driven and strong minded kids. My daughter, a Fulbright scholar, a filmmaker, who speaks 4 languages fluently; and my son, a college dropout, a technology entrepreneur, who became a millionaire at very young age, both told me that our ultimate passion should be to make this world a better place for EVERYONE. Yes, a better place for everyone, this ardor will keep many of us closer, no matter where we are!

Finally, I’ve been dropping some breadcrumbs on my life path through my website jingyuli.net,  keep in touch!

Best Regards,

Jingyu
